Preschoolers and Unit Studies
You can take any one of our unit study guides, or any other topic and simplify it for your preschooler. Most Science topics about God's creation like frogs, pond life, plants, the zoo, cooking, animals, insects, gardening or bees are GREAT fun. Preschoolers usually can't read or write, so theirs is a world of exploration and discovery. Any writing or working on booklets or notebooks, require the help of Mom -- but don't let this deter you from building notebooks for a preschooler. They LOVE having their own notebook! Let them tell you what they want to say, and you write it down. It's nice if you can use picture story paper (lined for preschoolers with a place for the child to draw a picture above).
Though some history topics may be a little harder for them to grasp because they don't have a real ability to understand time or geography, you certainly can learn about things like: Columbus, Pilgrims, Colonial Times, Cowboys, etc.
Incorporate the following activities into your preschool unit studies:
-- Remember little ones really like to get their hands into their work so plan some hands-on activities and artwork.
-- They love stories, so read aloud to them - at their level.
-- Talk to them. They come up with so many thought provoking questions - you'll be amazed how much children learn by discussion and by pointing things out to them.
-- Listen to audio tapes and watch videos.
-- Help them prepare something to share with Dad or grandparents.
-- Memorize a short Scripture that goes along with your topic.
Remember, this is the time to impress on your child that learning is delightful. Preschool should be very non-academic and FUN!
